Energy supply in developing countries is facing enormous challenges. More than 1.6 billion people in rural areas are still without access to electricity. On the other hand, in urban areas with rapid economic growth, it becomes more and more difficult to adapt energy generation capacity to the ever soaring demand. Meeting these challenges will require annual investments of 200-300 billion US-$ over the next decades. New and renewable energy technologies will play an importantrole in that process, as demonstrated by numerous action plans submitted at the International Conference for Renewable Energies last year in Bonn. Participating in that global investment programme is both a challenge and a great opportunity for the evolving clean energy industry in North and South. The 3rd International Symposium New Energy for the South promotes North-South cooperation on the development and dissemination of new and renewable energy technologies. The conference spreads information on business opportunities in selected countries and seeks to engage small and medium enterprises in international technology transfer. This year’s country focus is on China – including first hand and latest news on details of the upcoming renewable energy law. A novel feature of the conference is a best-practice forum on international technology transfer, presenting companies successfully participating in renewable energy market development in the South.
Solartransfer, an initiative of Science Park Gelsenkirchen, aims at stimulating North-South technology cooperation on clean energy technologies.
