Institute of Technical Thermodynamics, German Aerospace Center, Stuttgart, Germany

The Institute of Technical Thermodynamics of DLR is active in the field of renewable energy research and technology development for efficient and low emission energy conversion and utilization. Working in co-operation with other DLR institutes, industry and universities, research is focussed on solving key problems in electrochemical energy technology and solar energy conversion. Work encompasses application oriented research, development of laboratory and prototype models as well as design and operation of demonstration plants. System analysis and technology assessment supports the preparation of strategic decisions in the field of research and energy policy. The institute currently employs about 85 staff members.

The ‘System Analysis and Technology Assessment’ (STB) Division at DLR-ITT will be in charge of the NEEDS project. STB, which is headed by Dr. Joachim Nitsch, has a long term experience in technology assessment of renewable energy technologies. Main research activities are in the field of techno-economic utilisation analysis and system analysis, leading to the development of strategies for the market introduction and dissemination of new technologies, mainly in the energy and transport sector. DLR-ITT provides strong expertise in the field of LCA of renewable energy technologies, in particular of fuel cells and the hydrogen fuel chain. The close link of the System Analysis and Technology Assessment Division with the technology development activities in the same institute guarantees an application oriented use of interdisciplinary research results. Results have been actively disseminated through close links to public institutions, politicians, and industry.
