) Shell Solar is one of the leading solar companies in the world. It is the aim of the company to develop the commercial opportunities of solar electric power also known as photovoltaics (PV).
Shell Solar has PV manufacturing facilities with a total yearly capacity of some 60 Mega Watt of solar cellss: Ingot growing and wafers in Vancouver, Washington, US; Mono crystalline and cells and modules in Camarillo, California, US;. CIS modules in Camarillo, California, US: Multi crystalline cells at its factory in Gelsenkirchen, Germany; A second cell production line is being planned at Gelsenkirchen and will become operational in Q2 2003, increasing capacity to 25 MW. Mono and multi solar module (toll) manufacturing capacity in Evora, Portugal; Shell Solar products – solar cells, solar modules and solar systems, are marketed worldwide. The company employs around 1100 people and has access to a global network of professional distributors and sales partners in more than 90 countries; sales offices are located in the US, Germany and Singapore. Shell Soalr runs rural ventures in India, Sri Lanka, China, the Philippines and South Africa. The head office is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Shell Solar focuses on developing PV solutions for three distinct market segments:Grid Connected Solar Systems ~ starting from 400watt systems to 1MW and above, depending on individual projects. This activity covers installation, maintenance, insurance and financing in areas where an electricity network is present. Off Grid – solar solutions for areas without an electrical network: Habitat Solar Electrification ~ bringing solar PV to end-users in remote residential areas without an electricity grid. This includes homes systems, water pumping, healthcare and education. Off Grid Industrial ~ Low maintenance, reliable and cost efficient solar PV solutions for remote industrial applications, including telecommunication, oil and gas and telemetric systems The company is the sole provider that has access to both mono- and multi crystalline cell technologies (the current main stream solar cell technologies) and to thin film or CIS technology (the next generation of solar PV technology, for which Shell Solar has an operational production line in Camarillo, California).
Being involved in Solar PV for more than 25 years, Shell Solar is the absolute number one in the supplied solar cells and modules with a peak power of 300 MW. This represents around one fifth of total solar power installed worldwide.
