The Science Park Gelsenkirchen is a symbol of, and a catalyst for the structural change of The Ruhr, Europe´s largest industrial agglomeration. The conceptual and physical architecture of the park represents a change of direction and the ushering in of a new era. There is great potential here for young and innovative industries.

Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf’s industrial history:
Circa
1850 Ückendorf still has a rural character.
1861 Construction of the "Rheinelbe" mine begins.
1889 Gelsenkirchener Gußstahl- und Eisenwerke AG (Cast Steel and Iron Works AG) begins operations.
1900 "Rheinelbe" is one of the largest mines in the district.
1930 "Rheinelbe" closes for technical reasons.
1973/74 Thyssen takes over the steelworks.
1984 Thyssen-Guß (Thyssen foundry) is closed.
1989 Plans for a Science and Technology Park begin.
1995 The Science Park Gelsenkirchen is opened.
1996 The world’s largest rooftop solar power plant is put into operation.
2000 The Science Park Gelsenkirchen is a registered project of the World Exposition EXPO 2000.
2004 Opening of the international exhibitions RuhrEnergy and SolarExpo.
